The 2.37 million figure uses American Community Survey five-year estimates for the fifteen divisions the Society researches. The Census Bureau’s estimate for the full Austin metro is more than 2.5 million. Both figures are accurate for their respective geographies and instruments.
What Leaders Should Notice
Greater Austin is growing quickly, but not evenly. Communities across the metropolitan area carry different histories, resources, pressures, and patterns of Christian presence.
The share of practicing Christians has declined while the share of residents who do not identify as Christian has grown. At the same time, the Church remains broad, multilingual, and differently distributed across the region.
These findings matter because prayer, planning, mission, and collaboration become more faithful when they begin with the people and places actually in view.

Population: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program, 2004 to 2024. The Society counts 2,372,485 residents across fifteen Census County Divisions, 97.8 percent of the Census metro, using American Community Survey five-year estimates. Practicing Christians and the non-Christian share: Barna Group and Pew Research Center survey research on Greater Austin, 2012 to 2024. Congregation counts: the Society’s church database, as of August 2026.
Bring the City Into the Room
Evidence becomes useful when leaders bring local knowledge, prayer, interpretation, and shared responsibility to it. Gatherings make room for that work to begin in relationship.
